joinXS Recorder

joinXS Recorder receives live JPEG XS video over IP and records it straight to an MXF file, so contribution feeds encoded with JPEG XS go directly into an editing workflow.

What it does

joinXS Recorder ingests JPEG XS streams carried over SMPTE ST 2110-22 (RTP), decodes them for live preview, and writes the incoming video to disk as JPEG XS in MXF (SMPTE ST 2124). Sources can be added either manually, by entering RTP endpoints, or automatically through NMOS discovery and registration on the network.

Recording a secondary audio stream alongside the video is optional. When configured, joinXS Recorder receives the audio from its own RTP address or NMOS sender, independent of the video source, and muxes both into a single OP1a MXF file. Recording video only, without an audio source, works as well.

The JPEG XS essence is written to the MXF container as-is, without re-encoding. Because there is no transcode step, the pipeline stays lightweight even at high resolutions and frame rates, up to 8K at 60 fps.

You can also select an audio-only source. In that case, no video preview is available.

The app requires a license. You sign in on first launch before the app registers as an NMOS node or connects to a stream. See Licensing for activation options, or Demo mode to evaluate joinXS Recorder without a license.

User guide

  • Getting started: requirements, installation, sign-in, and your first recording.
  • Sources: select discovered streams or enter custom RTP endpoints.
  • Recording: monitor capture, inspect stream information, and stop recording.
  • Settings: configure preview, destination, filenames, NMOS, and logs.
  • Licensing: manage online and offline activation or use demo mode.
  • Troubleshooting: resolve source, capture, and licensing problems.
  • Tuning Windows UDP reception: increase NIC receive buffers and investigate packet loss on Windows.

Supported formats

Direction Format Transport / container
Input JPEG XS video SMPTE ST 2110-22 over RTP, added manually or discovered via NMOS
Input Audio (optional) SMPTE ST 2110-30 over RTP, from its own address or NMOS sender, independent of the video source
Output JPEG XS video, with optional audio OP1a MXF (SMPTE ST 2124)

Recording is a direct remux of the incoming JPEG XS essence into MXF, with no re-encoding. The audio stream is optional; recording video only also works.

Current limitations and future support

  • PTP: Full Precision Time Protocol support with user-configurable options is not yet available and is expected in a future version.
  • Additional NMOS specifications: Beyond the current IS-04 and IS-05 functionality, potential additions in future versions include IS-08, IS-09, IS-10, IS-11, IS-12, IS-14, BCP-003, BCP-005, and BCP-008-01. Priorities depend on user feedback; support for every listed specification is not guaranteed.

No release version or delivery date is committed for these additions. Share your requirements and the specifications important to your workflow with support.
